Angle Creation: What Makes a Good Angle?

By now you must be aware that affiliate marketing is all about making angles. It is about creating a dance choreography that brings together merchants and buyers happily together. For good of both.

That’s why creating angles is considered as one of the most creative and fun aspect of affiliate marketing. It’s all about getting to know the offer like the back of your hand, while brainstorming loads of incentives and selling points for her.

Popular belief is that #1 reason for offer burnout is pure uninspired thinking. Imagine a number of affiliates all choosing an offer and running with the first angle that came to mind. That often creates a chokepoint, a bottleneck that causes most of them to lose. Have they, however, taken their time and thought beyond most common and tested out angles, they might have come up with creative solutions that would prolong the lifetime of their campaigns.

What Defines a Good Angle?

It’s worth reminding yourselves that not all angles produce the same result. Provoking a desired action is what a good angle should do. It’s also worth reminding yourselves of the Life Force 8 concept, brought to you by Drew Eric Whitman in his book Ca$hvertising.

Life Force 8 lists 8 (unsurprisingly) basic human needs that are hard-wired into each individual. As such, we don’t need to be reminded that we’re in need of them. The list includes the need for survival, enjoyment of life, life extension, freedom from fear, care and protection of loved ones, etc.

And you’re asking why your campaign angle need to consist of at least one of those needs? It’s very simple. People don’t want these things. They need them. Hook, line and sinker.

Until more affiliates come to terms with the need for out-of-the-box thinking, the result would be the continuing trend of 80% affiliates making money based on same 20% of the ideas. And that is a bottleneck waiting to happen.

Easily Source New Angles

It is the right time to stop with your run-of-the-mill affiliate campaign and start thinking about the things that trigger a deeper emotional reaction in customers. Some of you must be thinking that this kind of angle creation requires a deeper understanding of human psychology and whatnot.

Actually no, this step can be very easy. Creating new angles is now just down to connecting your affiliate campaign with the basic need you’re aiming to satisfy. How does the product relate to social approval,  enjoyment of life, freedom, comfort, survival and care for others, and so on.

Sharp and Focused

Many marketing affiliate experts have written extensive instructions on how to fully understand the process of angle creation. When reading them, one begins to think that there’s too much confusing techniques and too many things to take care of. But not all of them.

For example, this article by Charles Ngo provided more than enough material to finally understand what many affiliates are doing wrong. Although he goes into more detail about the full process of creating angles, here, we’re just interested in good angles. Charles also mentions the Life Force 8 concept and gives a plastic example based on one of his previous affiliate campaigns.

And when you upgrade your angle generation process, you will never again be satisfied with average results. But don’t forget one very important thing: Marketing is all about proper targeting of people who act in a specific way. But it’s not about creating an angle for everybody. Only for those that can help both merchants and buyers. It’s all about creating an angle that will call the aforementioned merchants and buyers to dance.
